Definition: Purpura are large flat areas caused by bleeding under the skin.
This type of bleeding under the skin may be caused by:
- injury
- blood poisoning (septicemia)
- low numbers of platelets in the blood (necessary for clotting)
- idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
- Henoch-Schonlein purpura
