Definition: A genetic counselor is a professional who has completed a master’s program in genetics and counseling skills and has passed a certification exam. A genetic counselor helps you determine if you have or are at risk for a genetic disorder, and gives you information about the condition, such as your chances of passing it on to your children. The counselor can explain the medical science involved in your situation, provide support and address any emotional issues you may have.
