Tony nomination for Fonda as woman with ALS in "33 Variations"

Jane Fonda33 Variations, a play by Moisés Kaufman, has received 5 Tony Award nominations. Among them is Best Performance for a Leading Actress in a Play: Jane Fonda, for her portrayal of the character Dr. Katherine Brandt. Dr. Brandt is a musicologist, a Beethoven specialist, who's just been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease), a neurodegenerative disorder. The play focuses on Dr. Brandt's struggling to understand one of Beethoven's works, but in the process she also has to cope with her diagnosis and her relationships with the people in her life.
