World's tallest woman dies

Wednesday August 13, 2008
Sandy Allen, who at 7 feet 7 inches tall was recognized as the world's tallest woman, died Wednesday, August 12, according to a report by MSNBC.com. Allen developed gigantism from acromegaly, a hormonal disorder in which there is overproduction of growth hormone. In Allen's case, a tumor on the pituitary gland in her brain produced the excess growth hormone. The acromegaly also caused a number of health problems for Allen including a recurring blood infection, along with diabetes, breathing troubles and kidney failure. The cause of her death is not yet known.
