Aminoglycoside antibiotics increase risk of kidney failure in CF

From Mary Kugler, R.N., About.com GuideJune 20, 2008

Researchers from the University Nottingham, UK, studied factors associated with an increased risk of kidney failure in people with cystic fibrosis (CF), an exocrine disorder. Several types of intravenous antibiotics are used to treat lung infections in people with CF. They found that the use of intravenous aminoglycoside antibiotics, especially Garamycin (gentamicin), was significantly more common among the people with CF who developed kidney failure.

Bottom line: This study suggests that the use of gentamicin to treat lung infections in people with CF should be carefully evaluated, especially in individuals who already have risk factors for kidney failure.
