Ground beef may be contaminated

Tuesday June 12, 2007
USDA ground beef inspectionSpinach, organic carrot juice, chicken, turkey--the list of foods being recalled for possibly being contaminated with bacteria continues. This time it's fresh and frozen ground beef distributed by United Food Group, LLC. About 6 million pounds of meat distributed between April 6 and 20, 2007, in 11 Western U.S. states is being recalled because of possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination. The states where the meat was sold are Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. It was sold under the brand names Moran's All Natural, Miller Meat Company, Stater Bros., Trader Joe's Butcher Shop, Inter-American Products, Inc., and Basha's. United Food Group's hot line is 1-800-325-4164.

Although all the people infected so far (14) have recovered, the risk of contracting an E. coli infection and developing hemolytic uremic syndrome and kidney failure continues if people still have the suspect meat in their home freezers. The meat shown be thrown out or returned to the store for a refund.

Also, Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc., a Sherman, Texas, establishment, is voluntarily recalling approximately 40,440 pounds of ground beef products due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7. The meat was sold as Angus Steak Burgers and All Natural Ground Beef in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas. The Tyson Consumer Hotline at (800) 233-6332.
