Mixed results for infliximab treatment of sarcoidosis

From Mary Kugler, R.N., About.com GuideNovember 7, 2006

Remicade (infliximab)Several reports have been published in the medical literature suggesting that infliximab (Remicade) is beneficial in treating sarcoidosis in the lungs, so researchers at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in Ohio designed a study to see if the drug is a good treatment. They assigned a group of individuals with sarcoidosis into three groups: 44 received infliximab at a dose of 3 mg/kg, 44 received the drug at a dose of 5 mg/kg, and 46 received a sugar pill (placebo). The researchers found that while infliximab did slightly improve the treated individuals' ability to breathe, there were no improvements in other tests of lung health, like how far the individuals could walk in 6 minutes. The researchers note that further research is needed to identify if there is any true benefit of infliximab treatment for sarcoidosis. The research was published in the October 2006 issue of American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
