Training parents to manage behavior in Tourette syndrome

Wednesday October 11, 2006
Learning to manage children's behavior can be challengingA study conducted by Yale School of Nursing tested a program which trained parents how to manage the disruptive behavior of children ages 6-12 years who have Tourette syndrome or other tic disorders. Children with Tourette syndrome often have disruptive behavior or associated conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The 10-week program included positive reinforcement for appropriate behavior, communicating directions effectively, and being consistent with consequences. The results showed the training program was successful in controlling moderate to severe behavior problems. The study was published in the August 2006 issue of Journal of Child Neurology.
