Teriparatide use in osteogenesis imperfecta studied

Thursday June 8, 2006
A study led by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University is examining the effectiveness of the synthesized parathyroid hormone teriparatide (FORTEO) in increasing bone mass and improving bone structure in adults affected by osteogenesis imperfecta (OI). The disorder, an inherited condition also known as brittle bone disease, results from an abnormality in type I collagen in the body. The study will enroll 90 men and women ages 18 and older for an 18-month trial. Participants will receive either FORTEO or a placebo and will be examined several times during the trial period, which will include measuring their bone mineral densities. For more information about the FORTEO study, contact Sandra Veith at OHSU at 503 494-5630 or veithsa@ohsu.edu.
