Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Alcohol use during pregnancy damages the developing fetus and may result in fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued guidelines for the identification of FAS in October 2005 that update and refine diagnosis and evaluate existing practices that might reduce the long-term effects of FAS. One fact remains clear: no “safe” level of alcohol use during pregnancy has been established.
