Gaucher disease increases risk of multiple myeloma

According to a study published in the June 15, 2005, issue of Blood, individuals with Gaucher disease, a lipid storage disorder, have an increased risk of developing multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, but not of other types of cancer. Researchers from Tower Hematology Oncology Medical Group, in California, used data from the Gaucher Registry of nearly 3,000 individuals to investigate the cancer risks.
