First West Nile virus case in U.S. in 2005 reported

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the first case this year of human infection with West Nile virus occurred in Kansas on June 20, 2005. The virus has been found in birds, mosquitoes, or horses in 14 states. In 2004 there were 2,535 people infected with West Nile virus, of whom 98 died. The CDC recommends that everyone who spends time outdoors use insect repellent and wear long sleeves and pants to protect against mosquito bites.
