Research focuses on rise in gastroschisis

Saturday May 7, 2005
A review by researchers of the birth certificate database in Tennessee found a nearly three-fold increase in gastroschisis, a rare birth defect in which the infants are born with their intestines on the outside of their bodies. The researchers, at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, are also reviewing the medical records of the 369 Tennessee babies born with gastroschisis or a similar defect called omphalocele. The team plans to review the prenatal charts of the mothers to look for any factors associated with the defect. Their research will be published in the Journal of Perinatology.

My friend just had her second of four children born with Gastroschisis. Her first child had a severe case and did not survive. I was wondering if this is genetic?
