Toxic Shock Syndrome

Toxic shock syndrome became widely known in the U.S. after a number of young women died from it in the early 1980s. Although initially associated with tampon use in women, toxic shock and a similar disorder, toxic strep, have occurred after surgery, with wounds, and with skin infections.
