"Mermaid" girl begins surgery

Thursday February 10, 2005
Milagros Cerron, a 9-month-old Pervuvian girl called the "Little Mermaid" because of her rare birth defect, has undergone the first step in correcting her disorder. Born with sirenomelia, known as "mermaid syndrome," her legs are joined from her ankles to her abdomen, with her feet splayed out to the sides. Most children with mermaid syndrome do not survive because of kidney problems or other complications. Milagros is one of only 3 known cases existing in the world.

Doctors inserted bags of saline between the child's knees and ankles. These will be expanded over time to stretch the skin between the legs, which have separate bones and can at times be seen moving under the skin. In mid-March, specialists will slowly and carefully cut her legs apart as far as her lower thigh. Another operation expected three months later will divide them as far as her pelvis. You can read more about Milagros at MSNBC.com.
