Stiff-person syndrome research

From Mary Kugler, R.N., About.com GuideOctober 16, 2004

Researchers at Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg, Germany, investigated whether the excitability of neurons in the motor cortex is enhanced in stiff-person syndrome, and if this is related to autoimmunity against glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD). They compared 21 individuals with stiff-person syndrome with 14 age-matched controls using testing of motor neuron excitability. They also examined the levels of anti-GAD antibodies in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid. The findings suggested that motor neuron hyperexcitability in stiff-person syndrome is related to anti-GAD autoimmunity. The research was published in the April 2004 issue of Neurology.

I also have SPS and am currently being treated with Valium, Baclofen, Gabapentin and Mirtaz. I would like to know more about Rituximab, which my doctor is considering treating me with. Anyone being treated with it…. or any other meds, please keep in touch… we can all help eachother. Take care.
