New protein associated with pancreatic cancer identified

Wednesday June 9, 2004
Researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center have identified a protein which allows them to tell pancreatic cancer from normal pancreatic tissue better than the current blood test being used for it. They believe this protein, called CEACAM 1, could be the basis for a new blood test for early signs of pancreatic cancer. The researchers are also looking at gene tests to tell pancreatic cancer from inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
