Molecular analysis can identify hidden melanoma

Monday October 20, 2003
A team of researchers has developed a molecular test to detect the presence of four proteins associated with melanoma, a skin cancer that can be deadly. Melanoma may spread to the lymph nodes, which makes it harder to treat. This new test looks for the cancer proteins in tiny lymph node samples. In a study, the test found cancer in 25% of lymph nodes that were thought to be cancer-free. It is hoped that this test can improve the accuracy of diagnosis and identify patients who need preventive therapy.
